Guys I’ve been slacking!

Not in poker. I spent the last month playing basically every day in Florida. I was even fortunate enough to win a $6000 1st in a 98 player tournament!

(ok, though technically I chopped heads up, I only made the deal for TAX PURPOSES).

But it’s been a while since I put out a newsletter, so today I want to be generous. I thought to myself “What’s the best tip I can give my audience to change results today? Where can I offer an immediate impact?”

The River

River play is so crucial, because this is where the biggest bets in each hand are made. And this is where all of you are leaving money on the table. Don’t believe me? I can prove it:

Ask yourself, how often when you bet big, say $200 or more, do you showdown a winner? For most the answer will be 75%-80% of the time. Congratulations! 80% is an excellent grade, right?

Wrong. In this case we want a D-… We want 51%

Yes it can be uncomfortable to bet with less certainty but this unwillingness to confront discomfort is costing you money. Maybe it’s because betting $400 on the river and sometimes losing to a better hand is embarrassing. Maybe you’ve done this before and felt that betting when not certain is dumb. But trust me, it’s actually not.

You should be betting (and betting big) every time you figure to have the best hand!

Imagine you get to the river with top pair/top kicker. Maybe you’ve already bet $40 on the flop and $100 on turn. Your opponent checks. There is a chance they rivered two pair, but more likely than not you are still good. WAY too many players decide to check here and take their showdown value.

“I’ll wait for a better spot”

Terrible!

The river is where we can all go from small winner to big time crusher. Imagine now you bet $200 and your opponent reluctantly looks you up with a worse kicker. Instead of winning $140 on the hand you win $340… $200 extra. If you manage to do that once per 6 hr session…. that’s an extra $33/hr!

Be prepared to occasionally showdown a loser, but confident you are now tougher to play against and winning more. Even if you lose 1 out of 3, you are still winning an extra $200 per session! You only need to be 55% correct and you are printing money!

So push yourself. If you aren’t losing at showdown 40% of the time…. you are being way too conservative! Try betting (BIG) on the river whenever you are 55% confident you have the best hand. Try this for one month and gauge your results.
